It started well on a sunny Friday afternoon/evening those that hadn’t chosen to drive down at some unearthly hour on a Saturday morning met in a local hostelry for a very civilised evening of hardly any drinking and some lovely pub meals—Elaine thank you for booking.
Sleep slightly disturbed for some by enthusiastic karaoke, a Cher tribute act and a collapsing tent pole.
Saturday dawned foggy and our early drivers all arrived looking fresh as daisies. Rowing started a little late as we waited for fog to lift. But our open crew went out bright eyed and busy tailed and we were treated (throughout the whole regatta indeed) to a running commentary from the start line - move forward, move back and the like. Eventually… they got going and in perfect conditions they rowed long and strong. Followed shortly after by the Supervets who did as well.
Now that we’d actually rowed it was time to buy t-shirts to mark the occasion and before we repeated the rowing experience. Supervets went first this time and had an uneventful second row. The same could not be said for the Open crews second row - we began to wonder when cox stood up but apparently there was a broken yoke, multiple collisions one of which was from our very own Phoenix - the things some crews will do to try and win. Yokeless they powered on and beat three other crews despite the handicap, yeah!
Then we ate paella.
Great regatta great coxes and crews, will go again but will stay in a different hotel.
Crews were:
Open— Tom, Kate, Jordan, Laurence, Kat and Daisy coxed by James from Penzance and Newlyn
Supervets—Elaine, Sue CS, Adam, James Beale, Chris and Claire A coxed by Tim
We placed a respectable 25th in the Open and 15th in the Supervets categories.
