LCPGC Regatta 2025 - Racing and Social Report

By Ella Chaitow

14 Jun 2025

On Saturday  14th June London Cornish proudly held our 10th Anniversary Regatta on Richmond Riverside.

We were delighted to welcome crews from Brixham, Newhaven, Lyme Regis and as far afield as Penzance and Newlyn. Closer to home we also had a scratch crew of former club members—the ‘Legends’ (pictured bottom left).

With the largest number of boats to date (14) including three London Cornish Crews (and some of our ladies joining the Cornish Pirates from Penzance for the day) racing was lively and tightly contested (and kept on time admirably by our team of timers, race starters and pontoon crew).

London Cornish Crews were:

A Crew—Tom, Kate, Laurence, Jordan, Ella and Jo with Cox Tim

B Crew—Elaine, Sue C-S, Adam, James Beale, Kat and Tim with Cox Tom

C Crew—Lee, Vanessa, Jock, Su C, Andy and Steve from Caradan Gig Club

Legends—Alex, Ariane, Pete, Mike, Nicki and Dave with cox Maja

And Joining the Pirates—Daisy and Michelle

Each crew raced twice round the course in a timed race—in different boats each time to take account that some gigs are a little more sprightly than others! Results at the end of the first heat (pictured top right) were close with the top 5 crews all within a minute of each other.

The top four crews raced again against the incoming tide (with the lock sluices open it was a definite fight against the current in the second half of the race.

LCPGC A were victorious by 17 seconds—the smallest of margins—but very happy to bring the trophy back to its home in Richmond once more.

The final results were

1—LCPGC A

2—Brixham A

3—Brixham B

4—LCPGC B

Congratulations to the ’Legends’ Crew who managed a very respectable 5th place.

Once the rowing was completed the day moved on to the most important  activities—of eating pasties and celebrating with a beverage or two. DJ Jim was in attendance keeping the tunes going and there was an army of volunteers manning the  beer sales and the all important pasty cooking.

Aided by a new POS system to keep track of all the  takings and helped by selling pints to passing rugby fans attending the final at Twickenham we raised much needed funds for the club as well as having a great time.

Thank you to all the volunteers, rowers (both home grown and visiting clubs) and family and friends who made this day so special.
